Transitioning from Winter to Spring

We are in that time of the year that no one really knows what the weather is outside. The weather app says it’s 60 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny but feels like 45 degrees because of the wind, so you dress warm but when in the sun, you feel too warm and when in the shade, you need more layers. Here is what you should wear:

Trench Coat

A trench coat is my favorite kind of jacket to wear. It is so chic and makes any outfit (even just a plain all-black outfit) look 100 times better. Not to mention they are PERFECT for the rainy Spring days.

The scarf is a chic plus but perhaps unnecessary depending on your day. Now, back to the trench coat: a trench coat is very lightweight, so it is perfect for layering, meaning we can wear a long sleeve or even a sweater/cardigan with the trench coat on top and feel perfectly warm for those chilly Spring mornings and nights. Wearing it closed or even open gives a very chic look and a great example of how just one item of clothing can make a significant and fashionable difference.

Then, for those hours in between when the sun is out and we need less layers, we can take the trench coat off and instead of holding it in our arms (something we all know is rather inconvenient and not so chic), we can gently place it over our shoulders, which keeps it a part of our full ensemble. If you are like me, this is very important. Sometimes, I prefer to keep my trench coat on rather than taking it off as it is part of my full outfit!

This is why I love a good trench coat. It really is just a whole outfit by itself. And the best part? They are so accessible no matter what your budget is. These days, almost every brand has their own trench coat and they really all look so chic whether it is an affordable one from H&M or the classic from Burberry!

If you do not own one yet and I have convinced you that this really is the best piece to own in Spring (and Autumn so you really will get wear out of it!), below is a list of my favorite places you can look at! However, as I already mentioned, almost all brands have their own trench coat, so you can always shop your favorite brand!

Affordable

  • Zara: one of my favorite places to shop for quality in a great price range
  • H&M: I have a trench coat from H&M and it is my go to!
  • Mango

Mid Price Range

  • Tala: one of my favorite workout brands ever has stepped into other areas of clothing including a trench coat! It is originally $235 but it is currently on sale for $70.50, so if your size is in stock, you’re a lucky girl!
  • Ralph Lauren: While Ralph Lauren does have some pricier trench coats, they also have beautiful options in the $200s! My first trench coat was from Ralph Lauren and I still have it and wear it!
  • Reformation: I love taking care of the planet while also looking good.
  • Outlets: the outlets of many fashion brands are a great place to shop for a trench coat!

High-end

  • Many high-end brands have, but I must give a mention to the original creator, Burberry. It is an investment piece, but this jacket was created in the early 1900s and it is still just as loved now as it was back then. Besides, is there anything cuter than the classic Burberry print that is inside their trench coats and peeks through while we’re strutting down the streets?

The trench coat really is a timeless piece you will have in your wardrobe forever.

Spring Dresses

If you are like me, you want to wear cute spring dresses at the first sign of the flowers blooming. I love winter fashion but by the time Spring comes, I’m ready to move on from winter. Dresses are one of my favorite pieces to wear because we only need one piece of clothing, and we have our outfit! However, we must ensure that the one piece of clothing is chic and not just a t-shirt dress from Target that has no shape and does absolutely nothing for anybody.

As it is still a bit cool in Spring, we have many different options we can choose. We can go for a long sleeve dress, a dress that we can layer a long sleeve shirt with a bow underneath, or even a dress with a jacket on top. There are so many ways to style! The color and print of the dress can be completely up to you, I normally choose one solid color (white, beige, or pink). This is a time for your individuality to shine through as you choose a dress option that not only makes you look good on the outside, but also spotlights your confidence, uniqueness, and beauty shining out from within. Whether it is long or short dresses, floral print or plain, colorful or not, there is something for everyone.

Oh I just love a cute dress and jacket set that match so perfectly and look so chic while also keeping you warm!

Skirt and Top Set

Another of my favorite types of outfits to wear is a matching skirt and top set because they are timeless, so easy to put on, and look chic with very minimal effort. Something also great about these pieces is that if you own a few of them, they can be interchangeable so you can get many outfits out of them and being that they are timeless, they will be in your wardrobe forever!

In Spring, there can be some days where it might be too cold to wear bare legs, and so thank goodness for tights or stockings (yes, they are two different things). Tights are the one-piece garment that cover full legs and waist, while stockings are two pieces and they end at the knee/thigh. I prefer stockings but you can choose whichever is more comfortable for you. I do think that they both add something extra to an outfit besides providing warmth. As a bonus, if the weather gets too warm, both are so easy to take off and place in your purse/bag for the day.

If you are not a fan of tights or stockings (don’t worry, I don’t judge), knee high boots can be a great alternative to provide a little extra warmth, but we’ll talk about shoes a little further down.

We can find these sets in all the same places I mentioned for the dresses, so we can just shop in the same place(s)! I know this can be valuable for the women reading this who do not love shopping as much as I do (I will never forget about you).

Jeans and a T-shirt/Button down

If anyone who knows me is reading this, it is very likely they just gasped and said, “Amanda said jeans???” Ha! Although I am not a jeans girl, I cannot completely disregard the fact that others do like to wear jeans. Plus, I must admit that they do sometimes look really chic. Especially when paired with a trench coat or blazer and a pair of sunglasses! The trick of course is to have the right pair of jeans that are high quality and paired with the right high-quality t-shirt or button-down shirt (yes, we can get a high-quality clothing for a reasonable price – see below). A trench coat with a white t-shirt and blue or black jeans is just so classic and timeless and will NEVER be “basic.” I do think a trench coat also looks amazing with a solid or striped, blue button-down shirt (think Nate Archibald but *girl*) and jeans. Jeans and a button down with a cardigan thrown over the shoulders might have my heart. It looks clean and like the girl means business, but it was so simple to put together.

Shoes

Now it’s time for probably my favorite part of an outfit, shoes!!! I may be just as obsessed with shoes as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. My all-time favorite kind of shoes are the classic loafers. These shoes are so perfect and timeless that they have never gone out of style. Also, they are perfect for the rain! However, I have recently fallen in love with Mary Jane shoes. Oh, they are just so perfectly feminine and chic! I own many of them, in many different colors, as they go with everything I own. Another classic shoe that is perfect for Spring are ballet flats. These are also so feminine, delicate, and go with any outfit. And for my heel girlies, they make them heeled now, which is so cute and gives a little extra. Finally, knee high boots look super cute with skirt sets and some dresses while adding a little warmth for those chilly Spring days.
